The Traitor In Our Midst
During the course of this project, we are striving for an understanding - an understanding as to why your best friend could turn out to be your enemy; why some people disappear into the shadows mysteriously; and why someone would keep their mouth shut even if they were losing some fingers. The 20th century was a notorious time for these species of humans that were not only loyal to their greed, but to their legacy. During the Cold War, people feared their neighbors more than their governments. We wanted to learn how that fear is built and why it can be manipulated into something great. We wanted to see how the big players in the Cold War attempted to cheat the game and read the other player’s cards. People were willing to risk their lives and the lives of their families for money but we’re willing to go to such egregious lengths to ensure a nation would crumble. We planned to create simple products to the eye, but have a deeper and meaningful purpose beneath them, just like a spy. Because of our passion for this topic, we really delved into what it meant to be a spy, but also be a traitor in the midst.
HistoryAs part of our research to understand the reason as to why someone would be willing to risk all of that for some information, we really struggled as to why someone would be willing to risk it all and be a traitor. As we came to know, people had an genuine interest in saving their country, which caused us to take a step back especially in our present times. By understanding the reasoning as to why someone would risk it all, we looked at multiple traitors to our country and in Russia and we came up with some possible reasons as to why someone would risk their family their friends and everything they've ever known for their country. EnglishFor this particular part of our project, we really wanted to understand how a person could survive under such hard conditions both physically and mentally. One of the great ways people have communicated is through ciphers embedded in such public areas. The number one purpose of the Cold War was to see what's on the other side, who makes up a country. By understanding who makes up a country, we were able to understand why someone would betray it. we decided to embed our own Cipher an article we had written for the purpose of being slightly humorous, distracting the reader or possible readers from the cipher within. We actually based our cipher on the Caesar Cipher and the mistakes of the past when trying to recreate such a difficult subject. For those who are curious, everything one needs in order to decipher our create a cipher, we embedded all of the information publicly within our article.

Using different stitches and inspired by real-life techniques of spies, we are going to create a sweater designed not only to be admired as artistic but has a purpose: to be a walking cipher. When looking at the sweater we’ve created, you will see 2 colors used, both relevant to the time period we were focusing on. In this case, the 70’s and 80’s when espionage came to life. The front and back is a solid color, giving it a vest-like appearance. As for the sleeves, you will see a form of pattern that appears to look like little balls. This is morse code, used by spies to communicate, that spells out the word “Traitor.” Our idea for the word traitor came to be as we researched and learned about the espionage in America and Russia and the ties that may tempt them to risk it all. Money. Family. Greed. We may never know when there is a traitor in our midst.
